Asbestos activists in India have written to Admiral, Indian Navy Sh DK Joshi urging him to take steps so that asbestos is not used during repair works of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov.
Use of Asbestos in ships is a blatant violation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) circular 1374 which prohibits installation of all types of asbestos-containing material, including insulation in boilers, as of January 1, 2011. India is a member state of IMO since 1959
