Despite promises, asbestosis victims yet to get compensation

Jaipur: The dismal condition of asbestosis victims who are running from pillar to post for compensation has cast aspersions on state government’s claim of being sensitive and concerned to the poor.

The situation came to light when 17 tribal mine workers from Udaipur visited Jaipur demanding compensation in June. Apart from getting assurance and re-investigation of their health status to confirm asbestosis for fifth time, they have received nothing.

Came to press their demand for compensation, the mine workers faced a rude shock when they were told by senior officials that their reports were unavailable. “We are told that the rehabilitation board constituted for compensating asbestos victims has not received any report from the doctors at RNT medical college in Udiapur. Without those documents, no compensation can be awarded,” one of the victims said.
