In a good news for hundreds of mine workers afflicted with silicosis, the state the department of mines has sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore to be paid as relief to them.
According to a notification issued by the department of mines earlier this month, Rs 70 lakh has been sanctioned for Jodhpur and Rs 80 lakh for Karauli district.The notification says that those afflicted with the deadly disease will be paid Rs 1 lakh while the next of kin of those dead will be paid Rs 3 lakh as a relief measure.
This is the second time that the government has initiated a measure of this kind. Earlier, the next of kin of 28 silicosis workers and eight other silicosis afflicted workers were paid the sum through the Rajasthan Environment Health Administrative Board (REHAB).
REHAB collects a mining cess from each mine owner at the time of allotment of mines and has a deposit of Rs 284.61 crore under its environment and health cess fund (2008-09 to 2012-13) as against an expenditure of Rs 69.67crore. Read more
