VADODARA: International Workers Memorial Day was observed recently at Khambhat in Anand district. During the event, death of 25 agate workers who died in 2014 was mourned by the community. This is the highest number of deaths recorded since 2009 due to silicosis. Members of the community cut down their working hours to show solidarity.

Among the 25 people who died during the year, there were two mothers who died along with their sons. Both the pairs had started working around 2010 after the death of the husbands, also due to silicosis. Of the total deaths in 2014, six were women while 16 were men.
