Jodhpur: The Director General of Mines Safety (DGMS) has submitted before the Rajasthan High Court that there are about 33,000 mine leases in the state, with prevalence of silicosis, but not all of them fall under the purview of the Mines Act 1952.

In its reply on Monday sought by the high court at Jodhpur hearing a PIL on enforcement of the important provisions of the Mines Act 1952 and the rules and regulations made under it for ensuring the safety, security and health of the mine workers, the DGMS has stated, “Mines engaged in the extraction of kankar, murrum laterite, boulder, gravel, shingle, ordinary sand, ordinary clay, building stone, slate, road metal, earthy fullers earth, marl chalk and limestone do not fall under the purview of the Mines Act, if (a) the depth of the excavation does not exceed six metres; (b) the number of persons employed on any one day does not exceed fifty; and (c) explosives are not used in connection with the excavation (Section 3(1)(b) of the Mines Act, 1952)”. Read more
