As many as 108 workers are battling lung cancer at the city-based Gujarat Cancer Research Institute because they were constantly exposed to the deadly asbestos dust.
This is the sordid story of how a substance banned by almost every major country in the world is still in vogue in India and more specifically in manufacturing hubs like Guj arat. Activists from across the country converged on Ahmedabad seeking an immediate ban on asbestos.
Across India, asbestos consumption has grown from 2,83,000 tonnes in 2011 to 4,15,000 tonnes approximately. The material is imported from Russia, Brazil, and Kazakhstan.
